Weekly Devotion – December 17thWeekly Devotions
The third Sunday of Advent is known as Gaudete Sunday, a name that comes from the Latin word meaning “Rejoice!” As the rose candle on the Advent wreath is lit, we rejoice that Christmas is near.
We rejoice in the fact that our God does not keep His distance from us, but enters into our human experience, shares our sorrows and our struggles, and takes upon His shoulders the weight of our sins so that we might dare to hope for the gift of eternal life.
Today we rejoice in the Good News that the Lord’s love is greater than anything we could have ever imagined. He reconciles us poor sinners and abides with us so that we might never again fear the powers of sin and death. He gives us consolation in times of sorrow and courage in times of weakness.
He fills our hearts with the “peace of God which surpasses all understanding.” We rejoice this day not simply because of the nearness of the celebration of Christmas but also for the nearness of our God who makes that celebration possible.
We pray together: St. Jude, seek for me the power of the Holy Spirit, so I may be filled with all joy and peace in believing, and that I may abound in hope.
