On Holy Thursday, Jesus gave his friends the ultimate sign of his humility and love for them by washing their feet. He then demonstrated the full meaning of his life and death through breaking the bread of his body and drinking the wine of his blood with them. Yet this very night he would weep alone in the garden as his disciples slept. Let us meditate on what Christ, God’s only Son, did so willingly for you and me.

April 22nd — Good Friday
We take a moment on Good Friday to reflect with contrition and resolve:
“Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.” – Luke 24:43
While our hearts are heavy on Good Friday, it is not a day of despair. Our sins, weaknesses, and humanity are being forgiven, healed, and completely redeemed by the body of Christ now being broken on our behalf. We are to take heart and draw strength from Christ’s example of placing himself completely in his Father’s hands. Let us commit to remembering Jesus’ compassion, even in the midst of his painful death, as he forgave those who were crucifying him and the thief who hung beside him. We can do no less than forgive those who have offended us.

April 23rd — Holy Saturday
We take a moment on Holy Saturday to reflect with contrition and resolve:
“The Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death and hand him over to the Gentiles who will mock him, spit upon him, scourge him, and put him to death, but after three days he will rise.” – Mark 10:33-34
Today, Jesus, the Light of the World, lies lifeless in his tomb. Weary from the depth of emotion experienced during the Passion, we rest this day, just as the women who followed Jesus did before going to anoint Jesus’ body. Mary is our example today. She quietly mourns, but she does not despair. We mourn with her. We mourn for our separation from God caused by our sins. But our hope is in Christ and in his apostle, St. Jude. That’s why for us as followers of Christ, there is always hope in darkness. Even on the darkest day of the liturgical year, we can look to tomorrow with hope.

April 24th — Easter Sunday
We take a moment on Easter Sunday to reflect with contrition and resolve:
“Do not be afraid! I know that you are seeking Jesus the crucified. He is not here, for he has been raised just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples, ‘He has been raised from the dead.’” – Matthew 28: 1:5-7
What seemed impossible is now real. Jesus, who was dead just two days before, is now standing before his friends again. The resurrection of Christ defines all that we are as Christians—a people of hope, a people reconciled to the God who loves us with a love beyond our comprehension. The water of purity will be sprinkled on us today to remind us that the sin that separated us from God and laid us low is now erased from God’s memory and cleansed from our hearts. As devotees of St. Jude, we know that the heart of renewal is hope. As we have learned from Christ this Holy Week, we pray that each day we will love one another with grace; we will forgive one another with humility; we will hold onto faith in the midst of loss; and we will be aware that the new life of Easter is ours every day. Christ’s victory is our victory; his triumph over death is our new life!
