Because no one has hired us (Matt. 20:7)

Reflections from the Shrine, Unemployment

St. Jude ThaddeusA few weeks ago, I shared a story of a mother who taught in the elementary school in her community for more than a decade, but was laid off along with other teachers at the end of the last school year. Being laid off from the work she loved was devastating. She never saw it coming because she thought that her love of what she did translated into job security. She was very good with the kids, but she embraced her condition with hope and trust in God. She has since been hired as a substitute teacher while she continues to search for a full time position.

She knows the job market is stalled. Not a lot of jobs have been added in recent times. At the National Shrine of St. Jude, many devotees have requested prayers for themselves and their loved ones who are out of work and searching, for the most part, a non-existing job vacancy. Yet, there are still bills to pay, and for family with children, the challenge of feigning for their family is digging a deep hole into the unity, peace and harmony of family life. Many family relationships have been strained as resources grow thinner and thinner, and in many cases, they depend on the generosity of others to get by. As frustration heightens, the seed of discord is sowed. As hiring remains slow, those who are affected by the state of the job market can take an example from the laborers hired at the eleventh hour (Matt. 20:6).

These laborers were the last to be hired by the landowner, pretty much, when hope of being hired was waning. On the contrary, they were patient; they didn’t give up hope; they were determined not to give up on getting a job to do, and indeed they landowner found them and put them to work. Ultimately, they were patient, trusting that with God’s help they will be hired. Those who put their trust in God, in times of undesirable circumstances, shall never be disappointed (Psalm 125:1). The security, confidence and protection they have in God is like the mountains that surrounds Jerusalem (Psalm 125:2). The landowner in this week’s Gospel showed extraordinary generosity towards all the employees. The sweeping generous love of God aids us to weather the stormy joblessness that is causing many individuals and families a lot of pain and anxiety. If we remain steadfast in hope and unwavering in our patience, this current situation will not come between us and the love and companionship of God (Rom. 8:38-39). At the National Shrine of St. Jude we remain united in prayer with the unemployed or underemployed, trusting that everyone will soon return to the job of his or her dream by the help of God. Join us in prayer.

Dear Sacred Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for many favors. This time I ask for a very special one. (Here mention your request.) Take it, dear Jesus, and place it within your own broken heart, where your Father sees it. Then, in his merciful eyes it will become your favor and not mine. Amen.
Say for three days and promise to publish.
