Holy Spirit: Strength for the Weak.

Reflections from the Shrine

National Shrine of St. JudeWitnessing the arrest, trial and death of Jesus generated the fear of death into the followers of Jesus and they went into hiding. They were weakened by fear of having to face the same fate as Jesus. But when they received the Holy Spirit on Pentecost, the fear for their lives was replaced with boldness of character because the Holy Spirit gave them ability (Acts 2:4). Onwards, the disciples of Jesus fearlessly proclaimed Jesus as Savior, because the Holy Spirit was with them (Acts 4:20). Empowered by the Holy Spirit, they began to see their relationship with Jesus in a new light. Anyone who has received the Holy Spirit, like the disciples of Jesus, experiences the strength of God that overcomes weakness.

National Shrine of St. JudeOne of the graces we are blessed with is the call to forgiveness. When Jesus says “Peace be with you” in this week’s Gospel, he lets us know that we can achieve His peace through forgiveness of others—and ourselves.

We pray together: St. Jude, help me to have the humility to forgive so that I can know the peace of Christ.

Pentecost

Reading 1 Acts 2:1-11:
When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together. And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim.

Request a Mass this Memorial Day weekend

Holidays & Events

MemorialDayOn Memorial Day we honor the memory of the armed forces members who died fighting for their country.

This Memorial Day we join together in prayer with all those who have served our country. Both veterans and those currently serving in the military have our heartfelt blessings and deepest gratitude. Remember your loved ones, living and deceased, this Memorial Day by requesting a Mass in their honor.

When you request a Mass for a loved one or special intention, we will offer the Eucharist for your petition during our Sunday morning Mass at the National Shrine of St. Jude this Memorial Day weekend.

Jesus said “There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” Those lives lost in the line of duty are an ongoing example of the love of our service men and women for us and our country. May God bless you and your loved ones.

National Shrine of St. JudeTruth plays an important part in our Christian calling. Jesus prays in this week’s Gospel for a particular blessing on us: “Consecrate them in the truth. Your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, so I sent them into the world.”

We also celebrate the feast of Jesus’ Ascension to heaven this week. The Apostles realized that Christ’s Resurrection and Ascension was not something that happened only to Jesus, but that it is a promise from God for abundant life, and victory over death and sin in all its forms.
