Bible Diary for September 19th – 25th

Bible Diary

September 19
Sunday

25th Sunday in Ordinary Time

1st Reading: Am 8:4–7
Hear this, you who trample on the needy to do away with the weak of the land. You who say, “When will the new moon or the sabbath feast be over that we may open the store and sell our grain? Let us lower the measure and raise the price; let us cheat and tamper with the scales, and even sell the refuse with the whole grain. We will buy up the poor for money and the needy for a pair of sandals.”

Yahweh, the pride of Jacob, has sworn by himself, “I shall never forget their deeds.”

Solemn Novena to St. Jude for HealingOur reflection from the readings this week is:

“The Pharisees and teachers of the Law started grumbling, ‘This man welcomes outcasts and even eats with them!’”

There are social boundaries in all our hearts: people we shouldn’t be seen with, groups we shouldn’t support.

Bible Diary for September 12th – 18th

Bible Diary

September 12
Sunday

24th Sunday in Ordinary Time

1st Reading: Ex 32:7–11, 13–14
Yahweh said to Moses, “Go down at once, for your people, whom you brought up from the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves. They have quickly turned from the way I commanded them and have made for themselves a molten calf; they have bowed down before it and sacrificed to it and said: ‘These are your gods, Israel, who brought you out of Egypt.’”

And Yahweh said to Moses, “I see that these people are a stiff-necked people. Now just leave me that my anger may blaze against them. I will destroy them, but of you I will make a great nation.”

Do you know the mind of God?

Reflections from the Shrine

When an undesirable event hits, many of us too often associate the situation with God’s wrath.

We begin to blame the poor judgment we just made as the reason for the horrible situation we find ourselves. Some of those who lost their job during this long period of economic recession blame it on their poor choices and see God’s wrath in their joblessness. Parents waiting to take their baby home for the first time since birth three months ago struggle to understand why their baby has to stay in the hospital under doctors’ supervision while another parent’s child was given a clean bill of health moments after birth. Many people ask whether God will ever forgive them for their past poor judgment.

stjudeOur reflection from the readings this week is:

“Some teachers of the Law and some Pharisees wanted a reason to accuse Jesus of doing wrong, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath.”
