Weekly Devotion – June 28th

Weekly Devotions

National Shrine of St. JudeOur reflection from the readings this week is:

“He said to another man, ‘Follow me.’”

Each of us is called to ‘follow Jesus.’ But the question is how should we do it? This Gospel gives us an answer that is simple and certain:

June 27
Sunday

13th Sunday in Ordinary Time

1st Reading: 1 K 19:16b, 19-21
You shall also anoint Jehu, son of Nimshi, as king over Israel; and Elisha, son of Shaphat, from Abel Meholah, you shall anoint as prophet in your place.

So Elijah left. He found Elisha, son of Shaphat, who was plowing a field of twelve acres and was at the end of the twelfth acre. Elijah passed by him and cast his cloak over him. Elisha left the oxen, ran after Elijah and said, “Let me say goodbye to my father and mother; then I will follow you.” Elijah said to him, “Return if you want, don’t worry about what I did.” However, Elisha turned back, took the yoke of oxen and slew them. He roasted their meat on the pieces of the yoke and gave it to his people who ate of it. After this, he followed Elijah and began ministering to him.

Pray to St. JudeOur reflection from the readings this week is:

“What about you?” Jesus asked them. “Who do you say I am?”

Determining who Jesus is for us is the question and the work of a lifetime. Why? Because the answer to this question determines how we live and who and what we finally become.

Bible Diary for June 20 – 26

Bible Diary

June 20
Sunday

12th Sunday in Ordinary Time

1st Reading: Zech 12:10–11; 13:1
I will pour out on the family of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of love and supplication. They will look at the one who was pierced and mourn for him as for an only child, weeping bitterly as for a firstborn. The mourning in Jerusalem will be as great as the mourning of Haddadrimmon in the plain of Megiddo.

On that day a spring will well up for the family of David and for the inhabitants of Jerusalem to cleanse themselves of sin and defilement.

The Lord will not spurn a contrite heart (Psalm 51)

Reflections from the Shrine

National Shrine of St. JudeBill blew his opportunity to be a responsible husband and father to his wife and children. He was unfaithful to his wife and was never the father his children wished. In his personal life, Bill was abusing drugs and alcohol; and to his wife and children, he was a physical, emotional and mental abuser. His indiscretion was tearing his family to pieces. His wife was becoming increasingly drained by the poor judgments the man she loved and married to was making. She eventually got a divorce to protect her young children from the behavior of their father.

The National Shrine of St. Jude and the St. Jude League are a mission of The Claretians and exist to bring together devotees of St. Jude in a community of prayer and hope.
